Life in a list: the 10-minute list

There is something that occupies our every day, that steals our hours and gives us another excuse to not achieve our dreams. It's called dead time.

Just think about the last time you ran for the bus, arriving at the bus stop just in time to see it pulling away (I frequently overestimate my ability to make it down the road quickly). What about when you arrive at the post office only to find your ticket puts you number 25 in the queue (after all the UK loves queuing so much it now hands out tickets to mark the occasion). Or the time you realise the doctor has only called their 9.15am appointment and it's 10am. Oh and let's not forget the occasions you miscalculate dinner timings are are left watching the pot never boil. 

Of course, you could mourn your lot, kick yourself for not exercising enough or generally look a bit mean (or audibly huff). 

Or, you could get productive.

It's amazing what can be achieved in a often-discarded piece of dead time. Trouble is, without writing down how to use it when the opportunity arises, you could find yourself plotting and planning until it's time to move on.

In 10 minutes, I have emailed friends, written thank you notes that make me smile, completed my physio exercises (admittedly I have also received some odd looks) and actually read the industry articles that otherwise gather dust on my desk. I've listened to my headspace app, practised a bit of mindfulness, made an overdue call, planned a blog and read the first chapter of the book I promised I read. 

10 minutes is all it takes to make me realise that something is possible. 10 minutes is all I need to get started and stop procrastinating. 10 minutes is actually a good chunk of time if you use it wisely.

I have also discovered the Blinkist app, which I love! This clever, time-saving tool, accepts that we don't have the time or the bookshelves to surround ourselves in the greatest personal, professional and inspirational life thinking. So, it distils down both popular and topical thinking into a series of short digestible blinks that give you the gist - or motivate you to buy and devour the book linked to it. You probably need about 15 minutes in fairness. But there's nothing like a quick hit of inspiration to spur you on the greater things.

I should probably add that I do relax. But, nearly losing my life made me fear the dead time. And now it's not dead at all. Or, more accurately, it's only dead if I let it. 

So, if you're prepared to face the embarrassment of doing a few squats on a train platform or perfecting the art of writing while standing up, then get writing that list. 

I have mine tucked away in a notebook I carry with me as a quick reminder.

Who knows, you might find yourself rejoicing at news of a train delay or extra long queue at the GP surgery.

Life in a list: What would you say if you had to write a line a day?

My 35th birthday was more than just a mid-thirties milestone. 

It was the day I closed my five-year line a day book for the last time.

This little green book has been a great companion over the last five years. Every entryholds a memory of the day, a more thoughtful 'note to self' or life lesson and a rating (out of 10). I appreciate this may be stretching the definition of a list somewhat, but I do sit it firmly in my 'did it happen?' set of lists, the important ones that hold you to account and help you capture the past so you can shape the future. 

This little book has seen great happiness and success. This little book has seen cancer, loss and moments of real sadness. This little book has seen brilliant sunsets and terrible storms. This little book has experienced delicious dinners and skipped mealtimes. 

It may be small, but with more than 1,000 life lessons in here, this little book might just contain a pretty accurate definition of happiness - mine that is. 

Am I the same person who started writing in it at the age of 30? No. 

Am I happy about that fact? Absolutely. But, what is great about this book of moments is that it tells me exactly how I was feeling each and every day, which is a far more accurate record than a brain that can't even remember what it had for dinner last week. 

Rather than tuck it in a drawer with old diaries and 'I'm-sure-they-will-be-useful-one day' notebooks, I have started sifting through it. Typing out all the lessons, spotting trends and reminding myself of what it is that really makes me smile time and again will take time to explore. So, I thought I'd start with a few of the 'notes to self' or life lessons to give you a snapshot.

Here are some of my favourites (not all profound and without cliche):

9) Hard work isn't always enough (2012) 

10) The world is full of incredible people if you know where to look (2016)

11) Great flavours are not to be underestimated (2015) (Great to be documenting this more than a year after losing my taste buds to chemo) 

12) Knickers can be lucky (2012) (Maybe not a deep life lesson, but it made me laugh) 

13) If it's in the routine, it's easier to keep up (2013) (habits give you energy for other things) 

14) Anticipation is everything (2013) 

15) There is always time for friendship (2016) 

16) It is ok to not be ok (2014) 

17) The explanation is always better than the assumption (2012) 

18) You don't need butter to make a light and fluffy cake (2012) (not a metaphor for life, you can come here for baking tips too)

And the one that made me laugh out loud:

21) I'd pay to have Imelda Staunton act out scenes in my life (2012) (I had just seen her in a play so it wasn't as random as it sounds). 

I may not have analysed the last five years in detail, but I can already spot some interesting trends. I like things organised. I have a strange obsession with time and making the most of it. I like to push myself. Friendship and family are really important. I am quite fond of smiling and good food (particularly making bakes). I need to not procrastinate. Oh, and it seems I have a soft spot for Great British actresses. 

I think I am getting wiser (from lucky knickers to the importance of friendship). But, I think I still have much to learn. 

Ask me again when I've finished the next book! 

And, why not make 2017 the year you start your own 'line a day' book? More fun than a diary, less time-consuming than a journal and more insightful than not writing or remembering anything down at all!

Life in a list: The Brighter Life list

There is something quite sobering about lying in a hospital bed before life-saving cancer surgery and wondering if you’ll last the day - let alone the next decade.

In that bed, with just a gown, some paper knickers (if you could call them that) and the tightest stockings you will ever wear for company, I didn’t have an image. It didn’t matter if I had a career or a house or a nice handbag. In that moment, I had just one thing and one thing only: my memories.

Illness really does strip you bare and remind you of all the things that matter. Lying there, I remember thinking about all the times I’d stayed at home to make something for a friend (a cake, a knitted dishcloth, a chutney), when really what I should have been doing was making time for that friend.

So that’s why, when I was discharged from the hospital in my body corset (to help me walk after they used my tummy fat to reconstruct my right breast), I didn’t dig out the knitting needles. I went straight for the notebook. 

And I wrote a list. A long list. 

As far as lists go, the ‘Brighter Life' list – a distillation of all that you want to experience in life – is one of the best lists you will ever write.

This is no bucket list. This isn’t a list about death, but a pledge to live life and make memories as often as you can. 

It’s not a finite list, but a work in progress. It started on my blog smallboobsbigsmiles.com and has evolved in a series of notebooks since then (it amuses me that I like stationery about as much as lists). 

And it’s not an outrageously ambitious list (with Everest scaling and skydiving on the agenda), but one with a good smattering of quick wins and activities within my control as well as hopefully-soon-to-be lifetime achievements. 

The Brighter Life list is one of my ‘make it happen’ lists, a group of lists designed to making achieving things a routine activity. You can either read the original list here or read the edit below (not doing too bad bearing in mind I started it two years ago:

What’s interesting about this list (other than reminding me I still have A LOT to do) is that if you craft your own and try to spot themes, you can work out what you really love to do. For me that’s:

  • Health and exercise-related challenges
  • Cooking (mainly baking) and eating good food
  • Travel and adventure
  • Learning and creativity (particularly writing)
  • Charity

This interestingly matches my earlier blog about nurturing a hobby. The only thing missing is the people with which I hope to tick them off.

Life lesson number one: If you want to achieve something in life, write it down

I have heard it said that happiness lies at the end of a to-do list. Well, if you've ever got to the end of one, do write to me and let me know what it feels like. I just keep adding.

If you haven't got a list on the go - a place to score off your successes and focus your mind - you are not living. By list, I don't just mean a to-do list for work to get you to the end of a project or the start of another day. By list, I mean a life list - and lots of them!

Lists force life. By turning everything from goals and dreams to habits and contact with friends into a series of bullet points, we can both write the future and celebrate - or learn from - the past.

Not all lists are born equal. While a great way to remember all the things you have to do, the most important ones are those that capture what you really want to do or help you work out what you love doing. A 'brighter life list' will get you thinking about climbing that mountain. A 'gratitude diary' will record what it felt like when you made it to the summit. A world without a 'where next?' list, is just a world. A world with a list of all the destinations you'd love to explore, is your world.

At a funeral over the summer, I learned just how important list-making was to a friend who had tragically lost his life. How I would have loved to have swapped bullet points with my inspiring colleague. In his memory, I am making a public commitment to keep listing and keep living. I know he wouldn't have wanted it any other way.
